Nf3 :P a waiting move from the get go - can transpose into almost anything. I've seen players with a that Deer in Headlights look with i open with Nf3.Besides almost every tournament player is well prepared to meet e4. As for d4 that's about equally good as Nf3 i think.

I would use e4 even though the sicillian defence plays strongly tords the center and promotion od the pawn on d4. But if faced with the sicillian I would play the Smith Morray. Its 1. e4 c5 2. d4 pxd4 3. c3 pxc3 4. nxc3. The advantage is that you have a pawn on e4 and a knight on c3 versus there no development and lost c pawn. The only problem is that your down a pawn. But e4 works good for me.

I use both... 1.e4 I use for openings like Ruy Lopez, Kings Indian Attack, and 1.d4 for the Queens Gambit. 1.d4 provides more lasting pressure in the middle and has less chance of tactical surprizes.... 1.e4 is more for open games, rather than slow manuvering... For me both work equally well..

currently my preferred 1st move. Mixing it up with the lines of "Vienna push", "Vienna Gambit" & the "Vienna Queen check".

@Steliyan_Petkov_Georgiev I do not agree that if you want to win you should play e4 and if you want a draw - d4. In general if you play the white you should always look for the win no matter of the opening move. Chess theory is very profound so you should play the debut you know best. If you feel more comfortable with e4 it is stupid to play d4 just because you think you get a better chance for a draw.

Currently I prefer e4.

I checked the success rates for white and black at one of the world's biggest game bases at chessgames.com: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/explorer
As you can see with 1.e4 white has a little greater chances to win compared to 1.d4. But what is also interesting is that the win rate for black after 1.e4 is significantly greater than 1.d4 - almost with 4%. So maybe the conclusion is if you want to win play 1.e4, if you don't want to lose play 1.d4.

Anyway the statistics provides by the site are from games by chess masters and advanced players. For players like me (I am about 1500 rating) I think it is better to play 1.e4 because, as @Pavel_Lechev already mentioned below, it leads to more open and tactical positions, which are great way for the novice player to learn tactics.

e4 (and variants after it) leads to more open and attractive games but gives the black more chances to equal the position. d4 (and variants after it) leads to more complex and closed positions but let the white keep the initiative more easily. I used to play e4 in the past but now I prefer d4.
